Second Semester Highlights

It's the start of a new semester and first semester exams are complete and graded. I feel like most classes have progressed as planned but some sections of Art 1 may not have absorbed and understood the main concepts discussed. I have reached this conclusion as a result of low exam grades. Despite the fact that we created projects and completed exercises that reinforced all of the major concepts defined for first semester, reviewed extensively for the exam, and used a word bank with definitions during the exam, grades were overall low which was frustrating for me.
I provided classes with an opportunity to re-do the essay portion of the exam if they chose to do so in order to provide them with a higher grade yet there were still students that chose not to even attempt the "re-do" stating that it "wouldn't help at all."
I feel that I did my part to teach the material and although I will make adjustments in the way I prep students for this exam in the future and will change portions of the exam itself to make it more "student friendly," I feel that the low grades were as a result of students' simply not listening during the review and choosing not to study for the exam.
All upper level classes did an excellent job with their exams. Art 2 students were given an in class activity based exam with art history research incorporated. This research was to be done prior to coming in for the exam and at least eighty percent of the students had completed their research prior to coming to class and had drawn a thumbnail sketch for their exam.
