My how things have FLOWN by this year! It has been a while since a post but we have been doing some amazing things in all of the art classes here at West Oak High School!
Art 1 students just finished an amazing project in which they used water media techniques to create a non-objective painting based on an emotion with a few being anger, vanity, and trapped. They used only lines shapes and a color scheme in within their work using web resources such as Kuler Color Schemes Site in order to create the perfect color scheme via the interactive website.
Art 2 students recently created "Portraits in Flux"and examined the portrait style of Giovanni Boldini, an Italian Aristocratic Painter who focused on creating implied movement and interesting texture
s within his depictions of women's beautiful costumes.Art 3 students are examining the genres of art mannerism, expressionism, cubism, and Ancient African sculpture. They were asked to make connections between these artists after studying the artists
( Pontormo and Parmigianino both mannerists) and Modigliani (an expressionist painter). Although these genres are very different, students found many similarities further emphasizing the often discussed idea that artists are constantly borrowing ideas from one another in order to get their inspiration. They will now create a self portrait combining these genres and creating an abstract version of themselves.
All of these lessons have dealt with the common topic in our Art Community as to why it is we often believe that realistic art work is the only kind of art that can be good. Think about this question and write your response. Here is the question:
Why is "real" or representational art the only "good" art out there? What is it about abstraction or non-objective artwork that is not interesting or "good?" Do you agree or disagree that realistic art is the "best" art? Why or why not?
